Since meeting in 2018, Don Gray and Roberta Aylward have been connected in their art practices through the mediums and process they use to make their work. They recently discovered they have another thing in common: their works have been speaking to each other.
They met in Don’s studio to have a conversation about exhibiting together, and to discuss a possible theme for this exhibit. What they heard, or saw, is the conversation their works are already having with each other. In some cases, the conversation is about color. There are other connections made through rhythm and movement in composition. In some, the conversation is loud and in others, paintings are whispering through a common thread.

In Body Language, Roberta Aylward explores the role of the subconscious in art-making—inviting the body, rather than conscious thought, to guide the process. Through instinctive gestures, revisions, and moments of emergence, the work becomes a record of lived experience: abstract at first glance, yet often tipping into the familiar as figurative forms appear unexpectedly.
